Anmerkung

The originally intended title of the song was “Gloria in excelsis Deo” but producer John Cale convinced Patti Smith not to do that.
The song fuses Van Morrison's “Gloria” (a song she covered on early performances), with a poem she wrote in 1974. Both music and lyrics of the original Morrison song have been significantly changed. The song starts (and ends) with the line: “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine”.

“Gloria in excelsis Deo” is also the title of a well-known Christian hymn and John Cale feared that this provocation would jeopardize Patti’s just starting career.
Therefore the song got the title “Gloria” and on releases the title was followed by complicated credits, always including a part, where the words of the full title can be read.

For example:
GLORIA: IN EXCELSIS DEO (Patti Smith)
Gloria (version) - (Van Morrison)

or:
GLORIA
IN EXCELSIS DEO (Patti Smith)
GLORIA (Version) – Van Morrison
