Anmerkung
During 1865 and 1866, Bruckner composed earlier forms of the Adagio and the Scherzo, which were edited and published in 1995 by Wolfgang Grandjean. For performance purposes, Grandjean has filled in some missing bars using the corresponding musical material from the 1877 version.
1866 (original unrevised version)
The first version of the symphony was written by Bruckner in Linz and published by William Carragan in 1998.
1868 version
A slightly revised version, which was prepared by Bruckner for the 1868 premiere was published by Thomas Röder.
1877 "Linz" version (Haas and Nowak)
Although usually referred to as the Linz version, this version was in fact revised by Bruckner in Vienna. It is available in separate editions by Robert Haas (published 1935) and Leopold Nowak (published 1953). The vast majority of recordings feature one of these two editions.
1891 "Vienna" version
This version comprises a further substantial revision by Bruckner, considerably different from the 1866 and 1877 versions, and is available in an edition by Günther Brosche, published in 1980. Some modern Bruckner scholarship has developed a degree of skepticism regarding the value of substantial changes made by Bruckner in what amounts to his dotage.
1893 first published edition
Edited by Doblinger under the supervision of Cyrill Hynais, this has relatively few substantive differences from the 1891 version.
